The Charter

The first Enlightenment gave humanity command of the outer world. It measured the heavens and mapped the body, priced the economy and clocked the atom, and built instruments of such precision that nothing material now escapes account. The interior of the human being received no such infrastructure, and whether a person's capacities for regulation, integrity, purpose, and connection are cohering into a life or quietly fragmenting beneath its weight remains, for all our science, unmeasured. What is not measured cannot be understood, and what cannot be understood is left to be formed on faith. Every field that forms people inherits this gap, the age now conferring unprecedented power on its machines inherits it at the hour it can least afford to, and Lux Foundation was founded to close it.

Lux Foundation is a nonprofit research organization devoted to building the sciences of the inner world. Its work begins with measurement, because every science begins there, and it extends wherever human coherence is formed or broken: in education, which is asked to cultivate character without instruments to see it; in health, where the person can disappear behind the symptom; in organizational and civic life, where institutions shape millions of interiors they cannot observe; and in humanity's deepening entanglement with its technologies, which now form the inner world at scale without measuring what they form. The ambition is generational, for the Foundation intends to build the instruments first, then the evidence, then the standards, and in time the field itself, and it takes its name from light in the plain conviction that the inner world deserves what the outer world has long enjoyed, which is the means to be seen.

The Foundation's first work is the Coherence Signature System, a proprietary and deterministic psychometric instrument for the study of whole-person coherence. The instrument core is complete, built prior to any institutional funding, and verified by a corpus of more than 2,900 automated tests, with deterministic reporting and auditable scoring throughout. Its methodology is held in confidence pending intellectual property protection and is opened to qualified funders, reviewers, and research partners under agreement, because an instrument that asks to be trusted must first allow itself to be inspected by those with the competence to judge it.

Three commitments govern everything the Foundation builds, and each is engineered into its instruments rather than promised alongside them. The instrument describes and does not diagnose, rank, or gate, and its architecture prevents it from doing so even if its stewards should one day wish otherwise. The participant owns and controls their own results, with consent and participant-controlled export built into the research platform itself, a working demonstration that interiority can be measured without being captured. And the evidence remains free to disappoint, for the Foundation fixes its criteria of success before any analysis begins and will publish null results as readily as favorable ones, since an instrument that cannot be proven wrong can never be trusted to be right.

The instrument's inaugural encounter with live human experience will be a pre-registered validation study, in which voluntary adult participants complete a baseline assessment, a guided developmental pathway, and longitudinal follow-ups, with results triangulated against established psychometric measures and evaluated by an independent psychometrician who had no part in the instrument's development. The protocol and its criteria are fixed before the experts are engaged, so that the instrument's designer cannot choose its judges, and alongside its results the Foundation will publish its study materials together with a public specification of its participant-sovereignty architecture, offered to the research community as a reference standard for ethically bounded study of the inner world.

Lux Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research organization, EIN 33-4039462, founded and directed by Gabi Kovalenko and sustained by philanthropic support. It operates with minimal overhead so that support flows to research rather than administration, and it holds the protection of its participants, the integrity of its methods, and the independence of its findings as duties of equal and non-negotiable rank.

A foundation that proposes to measure what holds a person together must expect to be measured against its own charter, and this document exists to make that measurement easy. The work it describes is meant to outlast any single study and, if it succeeds, any single steward, because fields are built the way trust is built, slowly, in public, and against the standing possibility of being wrong. The first Enlightenment began in the humility of admitting how little was known about the world, and this Foundation begins, deliberately, in the same humility about the human interior, holding the conviction that what the last four centuries accomplished for the outer world can now, carefully and honestly, be begun for the inner one.
